Smule, which has sold 10 million copies of whimsical music apps for the iPhone and iPad, today joined the "freemium," party with a free version of its Magic Piano iPad app for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Magic Piano is an a player-piano-like app that performs songs based on your keystrokes, even if you don't know how to play. The app comes with three songs pre-loaded, including Twinkle, Twinkle and Amazing Grace.
Smule hopes to entice you to buy more songs with its newly introduced "Smoola," a virtual currency sold in $2 increments. The songs go for 25-75 Smoolas, and choices include Lady Gaga's Poker Face, and the theme from the movie Chariots of Fire.
Smule co-founder Ge Wang says he wanted to "experiment" with the freemium model as a way to "greatly expand our audience."
Wang is seen in the video below running in slow motion to the theme from Chariots.
Other popular apps by Smule include the Magic Fiddle and Ocarina.
